The Wallowa Valley Music Alliance kicks off another season of Tunesmith Night, a monthly showcase of original music. The Saturday, October 13 show features songwriters Carinne, Bill Powers and Nicole Freshley. Venue is Sugar Time Bakery, located in the Burnaugh Building on North River Street and will provide the perfect atmosphere for our listening audience.
Carinne is a lyrical wordsmith, vocalist, guitarist, and composer who stirs the soul with a rich and unique blend of sophisticated groove and feel-good originality. She drives relentlessly to keep her experiences relative to her songwriting; blending soul, melody, and simplicity seamlessly allowing the songs to tell their side of the story.
Bill Powers, originally from Mississippi is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He’s also a music instructor teaching guitar and mandolin at String Theory in Bend, OR. He’s a DJ at KPOV Community radio in Bend. Prior to moving to Bend Oregon in 2014, Bill lived in Colorado for over twenty years and is a founding member of the esteemed old-timey bluegrass band Sweet Sunny South. Currently He leads Honey Don’t -a fine Americana band with his wife Shelley Gray. Songwriting influences include Robert Hunter, John Prine, Townes Vandt, Peter Rowan, Robert Earl Keen and Willie and Waylon and all those Texas folks– He has a warm and relaxed way of presenting his songs and with the various musical projects has recorded several CDs of mostly original songs. A couple of his tunes have been featured on NPR’s Car Talk Program.
Nicole Freshley writes songs about land and water, intertwining imagery of shifting seasons and geography with the shifting rhythms of human experience. Her reverence for the natural world and her desire to address environmental issues through song are rooted in her upbringing on the Washington coast. Nicole’s introspective songs explore the way small details of daily life accumulate and represent a larger experience.
Tunesmith Night is presented in a round-robin format, with each musician playing a song, then the next taking a turn, creating an interesting and varied performance. Admission is $10 at the door or by season pass. Doors open at 6pm (SEATING IS LIMITED), music at 7pm, all ages welcome. Sugar Time will have the kitchen open for soups and sandwiches, in addition to their usual yummy sweet treats (BYO adult beverages).
