We are pleased to be able to hold our fourth annual Wallowa Fiddle Tunes Workshop in 2008, building on the success and fun of previous years.

Our workshop location is the Wallowa School, in the town of Wallowa, Oregon (on the left of Highway 82 as you come in from La Grande and Elgin). Classes will be held in the elementary school wing, starting at 9 am Monday through Friday. Classes will meet for 5 hours each day, learning tunes chosen by the instructor. There will be plenty of time for practice, jam sessions. On Friday afternoon, July 11, classes will perform for each other. A nutritious lunch will be available daily in the school cafeteria for an additional charge. (add this option to your registration for $40)

After classes there will be optional short workshops and jam sessions, and at least one evening there will be a public dance, with workshop participants providing the music.
Workshop participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible chaperone. Curfew is 11 pm: all workshop participants under 18 must be in their own camp after 11. No alcohol, drugs, or weapons permitted on school grounds. Please bring your instrument(s) and accessories such as spare strings. Instructors will be providing tablature, music notation, chord charts, and other material, so bring a music stand.

FREE CAMPING!

On-site tent and RV camping (no hookups) is free to registered participants and their families. You may arrive on Sunday, July 8, after 3 pm. Camping areas must be vacated by 11 am, Saturday, July 11. Showers are available in the school's locker rooms (bring your own towels). Wallowa Lake is 27 miles from the workshop site. There are many other outdoor activities available in our mountain valley. Downtown Wallowa is a block from the school, with cafes, library, grocery stores, and the Wallowa History Center.

Classes offered 2008

Class Instructor

Fiddle 1

Fiddle tunes, lower intermediate. For fiddle players who have basic familiarity with their instrument and can play several tunes.

Carla Arnold
A native Oregonian, Carla Arnold has a broad wealth of musical experience to draw from including classical training on piano, violin and cello, traditional fiddle styles, and playing and calling for the contra-dance communities of the northwest. Carla also teaches mandolin, guitar, and fiddle. Drawing upon her extensive knowledge of music theory Carla emphasizes not only the importance of basic technique and good practice habits, but believes that making music should be, first and foremost, fun for the musician.

Fiddle 2

Fiddle - Intermediate

Robyn Freatman
Robyn will be teaching to the intermediate fiddler.
This course will include over ten tunes from a variety
of backgrounds including Irish, Old-time, Klezmer, and
Contra Dance. Basic key selection applies. Practice
motivation, music theory, memorization, proper
instrument placement, care and set up can all be
addressed over the week. Much motivation can be gained from this community based workshop.

Robyn Freatman grew up outside of Enterprise, playing
old-time fiddle tunes along with the violin classics.
She has been a regular at many NW fiddle and violin
contests including Gaston, Wallowa County, Banana
Belt, Allied Arts Festival, and others. Currently
teaching through the Suzuki approach in Portland,
Robyn plans on recording an old-time record in the
fall and continuing to build community and happy
children through music education.

Fiddle 3

Fiddle tunes, intermediate and advanced
For more experienced fiddle players, comfortable playing tunes in C, D, G, and A and beyond.

Andy Emert
Andy Emert began his fiddle playing odyssey 20 some years ago in Salem, Oregon. While learning the Suzuki method in primary school he stumbled upon fiddle playing at the local community center. After discovering the fun to be had while playing fiddle and guitar Andy has been attending contests and festivals ever since. Andy is the current Oregon State Fiddle Champion, won second at the Gaston, Oregon Fiddle Contest in February, and judged the National Oldtime Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho last June. Andy has been a student of music for several years. He received a Bachelors in Music while at Western Oregon University and received the Master of Education from Portland State University. He currently teaches violin and fiddle at the Community Music Center in Portland, Oregon and works at David Kerr Violin Shop.

Fiddle 4

Beginning Fiddle

9:00 - 11:00 AM
No experience required but you must have a fiddle and bow.

Connie Dunnington
There is no age limit because young and old will have fun learning together.  Parents are encouraged to learn along with their child and students under age seven must have an adult with them at all times. Very young children will be attending planned 5-10 minute sessions. The class will cover the basic posture, holding the instrument and bow correctly, how to tune, play scales. The simple fiddle tunes will be taught by ear. At other times we will use the book.  Before the week is over the class will be playing tunes along with a guitar. Teaching materials include a book with basic old-time fiddle tunes with written music and tablature, or choose the pre-school book for 5 and under. You will get a learning CD with the tunes played at normal and slow speeds. If you have a guitar/violin tuner and a music stand, bring them.

Connie began learning to play the fiddle as an adult. She performs regularly with her husband Rich, who plays guitar. She is currently teaching the group beginning fiddle classes for Community Education in the Columbia River Gorge. She teaches both adults and children. She is currently the Director of a group of young fiddle and guitar students ages 3 -19 who perform locally in church, at community events and fiddle contests. Connie has a degree in Early Childhood Education and has been a classroom teacher for over 25 years.

Guitar 1

Basic guitar backup
For those who know the rudiments of flatpicking and are reasonably familiar with basic chord formations in A, C, D, E, F, G, and the 7th chord formations in these keys.

Bob Webb
Bob’s class will explore both flatpick and fingerstyle accompaniment to fiddle tunes. He will also teach how to use the capo in ways that builds confidence in the often avoided 5th through 9th frets. Part of each class will be spent on learning to feel where the chords change, and how to move gracefully from one to the next.

Bob Webb of Charleston, West Virginia has played guitar and cello since childhood, and mandolin and mountain dulcimer for over 20 years. He has worked for years as an accompanist, most recently with songwriters Heidi Muller and Kate Long (“Who’ll Watch the Homeplace”). Bob was a key member of the house band for the syndicated radio show Mountain Stage for nine years, where he accompanied artists including Odetta, Tom Paxton, Shawn Colvin and Arlo Guthrie. Besides playing music, he is a recording engineer with his own studio in Charleston.

Guitar 2

Swing guitar backup
A fun and informative ride into the world of guitar.

Matt Bell
Moving away from open chords, we will use the stock “energizer bunnies” of swing chords to translate song chart symbols directly to your fret-board. With the addition of basic scales, we will put these patterns to work in picking out single note melodies, and then attaching them to the chords themselves. Throw in some walking bass lines, interchangeable turnarounds, and simple substitutions to make your rhythm playing sing, or to create your own chord melody arrangement.

Recently enrolled in the music program at Eastern Oregon University, Matt is a predominately self taught musician of 15 years, with studies focused around jazz harmony. From the street corner to the theatre, he has put swing guitar to work backing up singers, giving solo performances, working with numerous combos, and in countless jams at festivals around the country.

Mandolin

Bob Schneider
For that beginner or intermediate mandolin player seeking to hone their knowledge of various music styles including bluegrass, swing, old-time favorites or sweet waltzes. Learn backup techniques, rifs and fills and how to get better tone out of your instrument.

Lucky enough to be living in the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid ‘70’s, Bob caught a debut performance of a new emerging band called the David Grisman Quintet and hasn’t stopped playing the mandolin since. It was easy for him to make the switch from guitar and he finds that many of his current students are doing the same. Hailing now from Portland, Bob is building mandolins in his small garage workshop and travels the year round to bluegrass festivals teaching workshops or just taking in the all night jams.
